Sleep Disruption & Hearing Aids

When I use my hearing aids (daytime only) I find that my sleep at night is disrupted. Has anyone experience this problem, and, if so, do you know the explanation for it?

I have no explanation as such, can you hear things like fire alarms etc. without your aids? I can’t and quite often my sleep is disrupted, not that I am unduly worried. I think it’s more the silence after removing my aids. I usually drop off pretty quickly, but 3:30 am is my usual time to waken.

Thank you BarryH. My hearing loss is only moderate so I can hear things like fire alarms. At the moment I am trying a different set of HA’s, a few days with aids and then a few days without, to check that it really is the HA’s causing my sleep disruption. I am quite convinced that they are the problem.

Being awake for a while in the middle of the night is OK. It’s part of a normal sleep cycle, and you may not even remember it happening. If you’re awake for more than 1/2 hour or so as you worry about the troubles of the world, then it’s a problem. I don’t remember (my age, you know) if I started doing this when I started wearing HA. I’ll try not wearing my HA for a day or two if my wife can handle it. I gave her a loud bell to get my attention.

So I tried going without HA over the weekend. Saturday night I had a good sleep without an awake period, except for getting up to use the bathroom, which I’ve done all my life. Sunday night, however, I had an hour-long awake period, tossing and turning.
YMMV

So, nothing conclusive on those two nights. I hope your wife is still talking to you! I mentioned previously that I am trialling in a similar way, days with/without the HA’s. Similarly, nothing conclusive yet. The trialling would have to be done over a longer period - mine is about 2 weeks. At least a week to go.

I have been wearing aids for almost 20 years. I wear my aids almost every waking minute of the day. I don’t notice my tinnitus as long as i wear my aids but as soon as my aids come out my tinnitus screams at me. I sleep with a sound machine that is set to white noise to distract me from my tinnitus. At 77 years old i have good nights and not so good nights sleeping. I have severe hearing loss but I can hear fire alarms and sirens. I live out in the country so it is very quiet. If i go to family that live in the cities i can’t sleep.

Same here, @cvkemp. For me, I have been wearing aids for around 42 years, since 1982. I also wear mine every waking minute of every single day. After I take my hearing aids off, I have total silence and can’t hear anything. I am usually asleep within 10 minutes of lights out at night unless my brain is wired or I’ve had too much caffeine. Or I am otherwise stressed. Then I can’t sleep. No need for any additional machines.

Are you a new wearer? Perhaps there’s an adjustment period.

Maybe I am incorrectly blaming the HA’s. Time will tell.

No a new wearer. Have tried a different set before, but only for a few weeks.
