Roger On iN Autostart issue

I have VA furnished Audeo P90-RT aids with (2) VA installed 03 receivers. I also have a Version 1 Roger On iN with (2) 03 receivers installed which I purchased a while ago for my personal use. This allows me to use the Roger without affecting the VA installed receivers. Everything has interacted perfectly for over a year.

This morning I started hearing occasional noises while wearing my hearing aids in the kitchen. My fully charged Roger On iN was in my study over 20 feet away with the Power Slider in the off position. The Roger On iN was somehow connecting to my Hearing aids and transmitting to my aids WHILE SWITCHED OFF and not connected to anything.

This odd connecting continued throughout the morning. Each time I realized a connection had begun I would cycle the Roger’s Power Slider on, then off ending the event.

Following some soul searching I reset the hearing aids, forgot the Aids in the myPhonak App, deleted then reloaded all Apps, rebooted the iPhone and Apple Watch. Then - reset the Roger On iN and anything else I could think of inside my home. The problem still randomly reoccurs - sometimes while not being near the Roger…maybe my Roger On iN is haunted with Halloween rapidly approaching.

Previous forum members have mentioned Roger On’s with broken Power slider switches, but my switch appears okay allowing me to cycle the Roger On iN power whenever it decides to switch on surreptitiously.

Curious if my Roger On iN has a cold solder joint, etc. or possibly electronic interference within my home?

Hopefully someone has a fix. If not – Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed?

Hardware & Software Versions:

P90-RT aids - software version 1.1.13.0

Roger On iN - Not sure how to determine what the software version is.However, it was updated to the latest version roughly 1 year ago.

iPhone 13 Pro - iOS version 18.0 software

myRogerMic App - version 1.1.0

myPhonak App - version 6.9.0

Thanks,

David

This sounds interesting.
Is there power to the dock, the mic does not need to be on.
What is showing on the screen.
Not sure if you are aware but none of the roger mics "interfere " with the licenses. You could have used a On version. If you needed to use additional aids then the In version is appropriate.
Lastly, you can change settings in Target to only allow streaming when you want it ie a manual press on the aid or use the app.

I concur on this.

Also forgetting the aids in the app, would not solve this. Remember to delete those Bluetooth connections before re-pairing

@michael1 and @PeterH

All these events happened while the Roger was not plugged in nor sitting in it’s docking station.

Finally realized my Roger must be one of the ones with the broken power switch. It won’t shut off therefore it is hammering it’s battery and constantly beeping into my aids.

When plugged in it works perfectly but constantly interfers with normal function of my aids anytime I’m not using it and within range.

Unless I can switch it off somehow I will be forced to charge it up one more time - then open it up and forcefully actuate the power switch. This constant cycling my aids into RogerDirect + mic every time I’m within range of the Roger is making me CRAZZZZZY.

Thanks for replying

David

Have you access to Target, you could change to manual switching plus beep, in program options for Roger direct + mic, as a temporary measure

I don’t have access to target. My hearing aids are furnished by the VA therefore any personal use of Target would be frowned upon.

Guess it is time to make a request for a VA furnished Roger on.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

FWIW, The receivers (licenses) in your hearing aids are the ones doing the work. The receivers in the Roger On iN don’t do anything until they are transfered to hearing aids. There is a thread in the forum describing how to fix the switch. Not a difficult job as long as you have the right screwdriver and a steady hand

I understand how the receivers function and I have the correct screwdriver. I also have tremors in both hands which makes disassembling things rather difficult…

Besides - I thought the Roger switch issue was caused by a damaged internal part of the Power Slider where it contacts the actual on-off switch inside the Roger. I don’t have access to a replacement Power Slider switch anyway. The fix I read about involved 3D printing a replacement Power Slider switch.

Maybe I didn’t understand the switch problem referenced earlier…sorry.

At least some of the power switches had a manufacturing deficit where there was a hole in the back of the switch which kept the slider from properly moving the little power lever. I believe you are correct that somebody talked about using 3D to make a replacement. Others used some material to fill the little hole on the back of the slider so it would move the little on off lever. In my case I found the slider itself was positioned incorrectly and when it was replaced correctly the problem was solved. I am a little surprised that the slider worked for quite a while and then stopped working. I share your experience with tremors. I needed to go back and remove all the extra letters when writing this post

I went back thru the forum rereading all the different fixes as you suggested.

I can assume - since I have not opened my Roger yet, that any of the problems/solutions could be associated with my roger.

This morning the roger began having issues again so I tried to switch it off but wasn’t successful. I charged it and stayed out of range. Once it charged I unplugged it and manipulated the sliding switch a few times and finally slid it back into battery and was able to switch it off successfully after two days of problems.

My Roger will now be used as a TV transmitter until such time as my tremors have an off day and I’ll open it and fix it once and for all.

Thanks to everyone for your assistance! The pictures of the sliding switch in the switch repair guide allowed me to understand how to manipulate the slide plate square groove onto the switch. It felt as though the internal switch tab had slipped into the hole - so I just fiddled it until they alligned vertically and forced the switch back into the square slot.

It’s finally “switched” off. If the planets align and my fat thumb doesn’t break it again I’ll be happy.

Thanks again!

David

There is a small groove on the top and bottom that holds the slider in place. In my case the slider had escaped the groove and would not engage the on/off lever. Good luck. I have an On disassembled on my work bench waiting for a steady hands day.

They gave one to me. Shouldn’t be a problem.

Took your advice and prepared my work bench to dissect my Roger. This morning it returned to it’s auto-start while I ate breakfast so I stopped eating and took it apart. Then removed the slider and after being sure the actual little black switch soldered to the board was off.

Less than 10 minutes later the Roger turned itself on again…I was correct after all – the Roger switch is bad, or there is some type of damage in the device causing it to constantly restart.

Final move was giving it a full charge, then disconnecting the wire from the board at it’s connector.

FINALLY no more Roger interrupting me >10 times each day.

For such a high price, the build quality of these premium instruments is disappointing

I absolutely agree the Roger quality has issues. In fact the entire Roger ecosystem is poor.

If you asked 100 people on this forum to explain how the Roger license system works I’ll bet less than 10% would even have a rudimentary understanding.

Thankfully Phonak seems to be addressing this issue, but build quality is still a work in progress.

I LOVE my Roger On and am fortunate since I can request a new one from the VA to replace this broken personal one.
